My Blogroll

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

Finally, I got around to doing my blogroll—I have made a separate page for it, which you can find under Links: Blogroll.

Where Do They Come From?

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

I treat this blog and website as my hobby. Therefore, I feel very flattered by all the visitors stopping by on their way on the web. But where do they come from? Where do you come from?
I took at look at the traffic on my website for the past 14 days, and here is what I got out of it:

So about a third of my visits are from Denmark — that’s not so difficult to explain :-). What’s also very interesting is the “Other” category, which accounted for 15 pct of my traffic in the past 14 days. In fact, visits from 40 different countries (!) compose the “Other” category in the chart above. Wow!

Boss Outlet Coming to CPH

Monday, July 17th, 2006

One of my friends, who is a serial entrepreneur, has a new project up his sleeve—and all of us who love nice clothes should thank him for this wonderful idea: Opening a Hugo Boss Outlet in Copenhagen. Could it be more genius? (Think Chandler of Friends, when you read the previous question.)

Go to Boss Online, his web site, to learn more.

Overheard in New York–on a Map

Friday, July 14th, 2006

The first premise
One of the blogs that I subscribe to is Overheard in New York, which refers small conversations, tid-bits, and what have you that have been, well, overheard in the Big Apple. I think it is hilariously funny–and–having lived in New York City myself, it helps me drive down memory lane once in a while.

The second premise
Another one of my favourite sites on the web is Google Maps–and especially derivative sites such as the GMap Pedometer and FindVej (Danish). The site is lightning fast compared to other map services on the web.

Conclusion
Why shouldn’t you map the conversations that have been overheard in New York City on a map? Well, someone did it, and they used Google Maps–they call it Overplot.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2006

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

For those abroad, those not living in Copenhagen, or those who might have had their head in a bush the last four days: The Copenhagen Jazz Festival is right here, right now, and it is rocking swinging.

Being a jazz enthusiast myself (I play the saxophone–and I simply love Jazz), this is one of the best times to be in Copenhagen. I have not had as free a schedule as I would have liked these two weeks, but I get to see a little. And–Jamie Cullum is playing in Tivoli on Friday!

The Montreux Jazz Festival is also running right now. I wish I had the time to go, but Montreux will have to be next year . I promise. (I hope….) — (I was in Montreux in the fall–what a wonderful trip…)

Understanding Value Creation

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

This is the first post I’ve written, which is rather technical in nature (not really, but it’s the most technical I’ve ever written on my blog anyway). It is about deriving an expression for how changes in leverage, profitability, sales, and firm value multiples affects value creation, and by how much. The reason for writing this post was that I couldn’t find anything on the web, which satisfied me in explaining the derivation—so I did it myself.

We can look at value creation in companies in many ways—however, generally, we define value creation as the value created for shareholders from one point in time (t) to another (t+1), as follows (where S is equity value):

We are often interested in analysing exactly how this value came about, i.e. which factors influenced the value creation. As mentioned, there are several ways of looking at this and of breaking it down—here, I will focus on the very popular break-down into debt reduction, multiple expansion, and growth in earnings. The latter can again be divided into sales growth and margin expansion.

In other words, we want to arrive at an expression that groups value creation into what was created from debt reduction, multiple expansion, sales growth, and margin expansion. (more…)

Accomplishment

Sunday, July 9th, 2006

My blogging activity is still not up to normal pace. Feel free to attribute that to either (1) my computer being down, (2) the usual indoor inactivity (and outdoor activity) of summer time, (3) summer university–or any combination of the prior of your choosing :-).

Meanwhile, I found a very good post from Jeremy Zawodny on sense of accomplishment, and where you get it from. He divides personalities into the individual contributor, the team player, or the team leader/manager. I think the thoughts are very spot on, so go have a look at what he writes.
