Riddle Me This, Riddle Me That

Monday, November 7th, 2005

The last couple of weeks, some of my colleagues and I have been going crazy with riddles, brain teasers, and tests. It started because we needed to hire another one for our team, and then BANG we were giving each other brain teasers all the time. It’’s like being back in elementary school (or at any i-bank/consultancy interview, for that matter).

It made me think back of my 7th grade physics teacher. He was young, cool, and loved to tease us. We loved to tease him back, of course. He gave me a riddle, which I spent nearly a month trying to figure out.

This is a house, or a box, or whatever you might call it. It has 16 walls, which I numbered arbitrarily. Now, in one continuous line, starting either inside or outside the house, cross all of the walls, but never cross any wall more than once. Can you do that?

I never figured it out during the month, and I think I found out that it has no solution. At least that’’s what I maintain to this day to keep some of my 7th grade self-confidence. You’’re welcome to second-guess me, of course; let me know.

Go to BrainBashers for a collection of riddles, teasers and a lot more. Let me know if you have any good links.

Bad News

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

Douglas Adams (1952-2001) writes in his book, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,

“Nothing travels faster than the speed of light with the possible exception of bad news,
which obeys its own special laws.”

You had better remember this.

CBS Case Competition

Tuesday, September 13th, 2005

For a long time, business schools, particularly in the US, have arranged case competitions, where teams were to solve a business case within a period of time. The most common format is teams of four people solving a business case in 24 hours, whereafter they are to present their findings to a panel of judges followed by Q&A.

It was such a case competition I attended in Los Angeles in February this year (posts: NYC – CPH – LA, Sky Surfing, and Los Angeles Pics), which is probably the largest international case competition if you measure the number of teams participating.

At my school, the Copenhagen Business School (CBS), we also have this kind of competition. The CBS Case Competition is arranged solely by students in an organizing committee composed of circa 25 students (the number varies a little from year to year). As the case writer (the case for the CBS Case Competition is always written especially for the competition — real life, real time, which is quite unique in the world), I am in this organizing committee.

From our kick-off weekend, here is the picture of almost the entire organizing committee (except me, behind the camera, and a couple who couldn’t make it to the weekend).

America’s Cup

Saturday, August 27th, 2005

Louis Vuitton, Acts 6 & 7 of the 32nd America’s Cup are held in Malmo, Sweden. My good friend and business partner, Thomas Bo, invited my on to a VIP tour, where we, among other perks, got into the restricted “pit area” in the morning where all the boats were prepared for the day’s race.

Below, a couple of pics of the Luna Rossa Challenge Boat. They are not in the usual quality, because I didn’t want to bring my DSLR sailing, so these are taken with my K750i. (yes, I know… cell phone pics sucks).

New Website

Sunday, July 17th, 2005

The face-lifted version of my website is now online. Content-wise, there is still some ground to be covered, and it is by no means a substitute for the blog, but, rather, complementary.

Go to my website to see the face-lifted design.

The 13th Warrior

Monday, October 4th, 2004

I meant the thirteenth floor, but I felt tempted. :-).

If you are not up to speed, read my previous entry about elevators.

Yes, I’ve found a thirteenth floor, believe it or not. When my parents were here, I had the chance to visit the Waldorf-Astoria, and they actually have a thirteenth floor.

It’s True

Sunday, September 5th, 2004

There is no 13th floor in any of the buildings I have been in so far – so I’m beginning to think that what I hear is true; that no building in Manhattan has a 13th floor. I will be sure to let you know if I find one.

What is also apparent from the photograph is the raised dots, which helps blind people to navigate – you find these dots everywhere – in taxis, on buildings. The effort put into helping disabled surpasses my expectations, and, in my opinion, it sure surpasses the efforts put into the same cause in Denmark.

Please call 1-800-LAW FIRM

Monday, August 30th, 2004

How funny – I just saw an ad on TV, which said that if you, or someone you knew, had attempted suicide after taking the drug [drug name], you should call 1-800-LAW FIRM.

Treasure hunt?
